The Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve

The Glenlivet Founder's Reserve is the whiskey dedicated to Glenlivet's founder, George Smith who, in 1824, built up the first distillery in the Speyside area to get the distilling license after the Parliamentary Act. Master distiller Alan Winchester tried to evoke the style of the whiskeys crafted by George Smith by using mainly first-fill American oak barrels, mixing them with traditional ex-bourbon oak.

TASTING NOTES

Nose

Gentle and pleasant, creamy, with ripe yellow apple, also cooked apple and apricot. A fresher dimension is represented by zesty fruit, with just a touch of lemon. In the end some butterscotch and biscuits. Sweet, with an average vanilla hint.

Palate

The basic ABV makes it very affordable, yet slightly watery. Yellow fruit, toffee and a very sweet and mild spicy component. A very minor bitter note at the end, sweet almond.

Finish

Short, but again pleasant and sweet, with a decent creaminess.

The Glenlivet Founder's Reserve is overall an entry level whiskey, designed and crafted to be pleasant and fruity, with yellow fruit notes where apple stands out, with a twist of zesty fruit and a slightly bitter end note on the palate. Makes the job, even though the experience has a minor duration and intensity due to the basic ABV.
