Benriach 12yo Sherry Wood is a release from the Speyside distillery which has been relaunched in 2018 as an addition to its core unpeated range after three years of absence from shelves. It is fully matured in ex-Sherry casks before being finished in a combination of ex-Pedro Ximénez and ex-oloroso Sherry casks.
Fruity, yet still fresh: there are some light citrusy notes on the main red fruit main theme, with cranberries, strawberry, wet sultanas. Vanilla, quite direct. Some levels of creaminess are evident in the core spirit.
There is a somehow mineral note which is added to sultanas and cherries main aspects. The lemon freshness and the sweet sugar powder character are also confirmed. Slightly mono-dimensional, yet balanced.
Medium-short, on the same notes.
Benriach 12yo Sherry Wood seems a solid core range spirit. The profile is not the one of a sherry bomb; despite the complete maturation in sherry casks, the final product is balanced and gifted with a lemony character, making it a fresher drink. The core of red fruit is well crafted, even though there are some lacks on terms of depth and complexity.
